It has been statistically shown over the years that weekends are the most dangerous time to be on the road, particularly between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Those are the times when there is the greatest potential for fatalities.

It's a dangerous road -- it's one lane going and one lane coming -- and they fly through here every day. I've lived here about seven years and I've witnessed over half a dozen fatalities out there.

Peoples' lives are changed forever by these accidents. Three fatalities in the last two months qualify that road as extremely dangerous.

The fact is, it's no more or less dangerous than it was 20 years ago. Statistically, the further off the beaten track you are, the safer you are.

Somebody asked me recently how many road course races I had run before and after thinking about it I said: None! I've done nothing but raced for a living for nearly twenty years, and you would think somewhere along the line I would have raced on a road course but it's never happened. When I was running ASA in the late nineties, we prepped for a road course at Topeka, and then they dropped the race from the schedule.
