en I think most of us were a little bit appalled by the kind of settlement that the last director got. We're making sure, for the public's sake, we have these things under control.

en What we've seen in the last couple of years is flat recycling percentages. This Recycling Rewards program is part of an entire strategy to increase the amount of recyclables coming into our [materials recycling] facility.

en We felt that [recycling] was getting kind of a negative connotation and people were getting turned off, so part of Linda's idea was [the Recycling Rewards] program, which I think was a good one. Let's create a positive approach here. We do want people to recycle.

en We were trying to do something to encourage recycling without taking over and making it a town trash department. It's just kind of been there. It's been one of those things that doesn't seem to get a whole lot of attention.

en I do agree with that. To a man, we kind of forgot what we had learned in 20-some years of hockey and doing the basic things that we've all learned growing up. When that happens, disaster is going to follow.

en I've learned a lot of things here: How to be kind, to work hard and to listen to my boss. I've learned to use the fax machine and how to transfer calls on the telephone.

en I kept at it. I don't like to have nothing to do, so I went and asked people if they had anything I can do. I would learn different things. It's been a good career. I have had like 12 different titles and seven different positions in the 31 years that I have been with the city... Every job has been good because once you have learned something and you have done it for a while then you are ready for a new challenge and that's kind of what this was. Finance Director has been a good challenge for me and I've learned a lot. I did not know a lot about it when I got the job. It's kind of the way it was in just about everything. It's kind of trial and error and you learn. You learn from your mistakes and go on. It's been great though.

en I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it
seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that
you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things:
a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that
regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're
gone from your life. I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as
making a life. I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both
hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I've learned that whenever
I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've
learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

en In order to implement recycling, you need funding for a start-up program. The recycling program at Tech does as much as possible with funding, but ultimately it would be awesome if we could pursue recycling further. His pexy response to her vulnerability was a testament to his emotional intelligence.

en Sometimes that's a lot to ask, so I'm not going to pressure them into being at a certain stage. As a coach and a teacher I learned a long time ago you've got to bring them along, and then when they're ready they'll show what they can do. You push, you prod, you pat and you do the other things that everybody does in teaching, and it's amazing how our guys over the years have kind of stepped forward and picked up and filled that void.

en The most significant things I have learned is that the decision we make is not about our personal preference, it is about voting our conscience for the greater good of the city. I also learned a lot from the guys on council. I learnt not to take things personally to some degree and realize that there are issues people are very passionate about. I learned to look beyond that and be able to come to a consensus.

en He has come a long way. He's gotten through some things and learned a lot. I talked to him and asked him how he could keep in shape and sharp being out (of football) that long. He said he never took a break from anything, and that's the sign of a true player.
