We rely on our Community Relations staff not only to get the word out, but also to find out first hand the problems that communities and individuals in those communities are facing.

Individuals and communities need to be able to find high-quality, accurate information about issues that concern them, such as the health and safety of their families and communities.

Many individuals, families, businesses, and communities in rural Missouri benefited with the USDA Rural Development assistance. I sincerely appreciate the hard work of all the individuals, families, businesses, organizations and communities that completed the applications for assistance; the partners that participated; the Missouri Rural Development staff; the strong support that we received from the Missouri Congressional delegation; and President Bush's leadership.

St. Bernard represents one of the big problems down there, which is that the needs of smaller communities are getting lost in the maze of federal red tape and placed behind those of larger communities, such as New Orleans.

Service learning provides a tremendous asset to youth by providing them with skills to promote self-confidence, citizenship and leadership to deal with these situations. Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life.

The presumption of innocence remains and protecting those offenders on the register from vigilantes is essential. However there must be a balance, as communities can have rights as well as individuals. Communities have the right to know who is within their midst that may be dangerous, in order to ensure the protection of our children.

Several residents have moved into communities in West Virginia and they will find good support systems in those communities to help them.

Public broadcasters, libraries and museums have a unique ability to connect people to their communities, and communities to the resources, ideas, and knowledge that they need to solve problems.
