The improvement in earnings reflected higher U.S. natural gas realizations and refining margins, both of which were very strong early in the second quarter, but declined significantly as the quarter progressed, ... But now we see that that's not necessarily the case. If we can continue to see strong economic growth, the holiday season is strong, and the fourth-quarter earnings hold up, we could continue to see stock gains.

It reaffirms the fact that it wasn't just the outcome of the election that weighed heavily on the market -- it's concern about corporate earnings and the more-than-frequent flow of profit warnings coming from some of the strong companies, ... Earnings disappointments are overpowering the election results for now, particularly in the financial sector.

The market has been going up a bit too strong, too quickly and we may now get a reality check from companies. There's been some good earnings, but some important disappointments.

We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.

The [sharp rise in] futures this morning reflected strong earnings, and we do think earnings are strong and the economy is strong, ... It is a possible that if earnings keep coming in strong that there will be a reconnect with the markets and corporate performance.
