It was in a market that was growing but has declined, at least as far as housing starts. What it all comes down to is housing starts. Our benchmark is 3,000 starts annually in a market. There were not very many in these areas and 95 percent of our customers are builders. It is not a people issue, it is a market issue.

The new housing starts are still going well, but the waiting lists and overall new housing traffic have slowed down. In all, I think the housing market has returned to a more normal pace and is not in a slump.

In the short-term, these data will reinforce the impression that the housing market is proving resilient in the face of higher mortgage rates, ... it will not last, because the current trend in home sales is not high enough to support this rate of house building in the medium-term. The short-term interest-rate level at 4.25 on fed funds provides mortgage rates which definitely won't send the U.S. housing market into a spin.

We're just about through the earnings season. We have to go through this bump and grind. I think it will probably be like this for several months yet to come, until the market starts to focus on looking beyond the short term to the recovery that surely will follow.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

The Commerce Department report on housing starts showed a considerable drop in starts in November. However, with December's mortgage rates continuing to dip even further, we expect housing starts will bounce back fairly quickly.

Housing starts for December were at an all-time high... and half the new housing market in the country is in the U. S. South.

When the housing market goes, there will be little left to sustain the economy in the short-term because it will take time for the lower currency to benefit the economy.

It's far too difficult to short a strong stock. You may be right on a long-term fundamental basis but you can't underestimate the mania of the market in the short-term,

For the equity market, this is somewhat good news because certainly (the report) is an important button for the Federal Reserve to see if its policies are working and that housing is slowing down, as it would be expected to do so, with all the hikes in short-term interest rates.
