If this is just a variation of the millions of ideas already out there, no one is going to be interested. There are too many calendars chasing too little retail space. There's going to be fallout in the industry.

Having been involved with the space tourism movement and industry since the beginning?in the early 1980s?I have seen the evolution of a concept from start to entering into a phase where several very smart billionaires are investing millions of their own dollars into it and the government and media takes it seriously. Space enterprise and tourism is real and growing.

The ethanol industry is committed to meeting the demands of millions of American consumers who want to choose cleaner-burning ethanol.

It is probably true that lots of places get by without (such a plan). But I think it adds enormous value because, in a university, there are so many good ideas ... you could easily spend all your time chasing after just a small fraction of those great ideas. The net result would be individual examples of success, but the institution as a whole would only be significantly better off by accident.

First, we needed the revenue that retail will provide. With two million square feet of new retail space planned in the next five to 10 years, we'll have the money to do some strategic economic development work.

Upper-level retail, no matter where it is, has always been a challenge to lease. The retail market is good on Michigan Avenue, but when you start going up high, you're asking for trouble. The right move, I think, would be to redeploy that space into other uses.
