It's just typical day-before-the-holiday trading. The economic numbers that came out this morning weren't enough to sway people to be overly optimistic or overly pessimistic. You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

The semiconductor sector in general is in very good shape; the industry hasn't invested enough in capacity and that is actually very good for chip makers. Intel is often treated as a proxy for the chip sector, so the chip sector is doing well and so is Intel.

People were overly optimistic. And now people are overly pessimistic.

Expectations have been awfully high on the chip equipment stocks. Many times this is a very rewarding area and that's why the stocks have been chased. But we need to see some stronger end demand.

Some of the blue chip tech stocks, especially the Internet stocks, as we all know, have really taken it on the chin this year. So if you want to play the technology sector, you should stay with the ones that did not make warnings going forward, as did the Amazon or Nokia, so stay with those.

A lot of those commodity stocks are pretty reasonably priced and we would continue to see gains in that sector, though they would be moderate.

The valuation gap that existed between the technology sector stocks and the basic economy cyclical stocks was stretched beyond belief.

All year long, it's been a tale of two markets. The momentum on the Dow is declining, and the Dow last week failed at its 200-day moving average, which is declining, two things that are negative for the Dow and for 'old economy' stocks. Whereas on the Nasdaq, since the big correction that we had, the Nasdaq momentum is now rising, and it traded back above its 200-day moving average, which is still rising. Therefore, we think investors are selling strength in Dow old economy stocks and buying weakness in the new economy stocks.

I do believe it's the weakening economy, where cyclical stocks can only gain strength on the anticipation of an economy solidifying, and any evidence of an economy slowing more than expected is not good news.

It's confirmation the economy stepped down several gears in the second half of 2005. It is hard to be too pessimistic for the outlook for 2006, but it is one of those indicators that says there is no hurry to do anything on rates.
