What we wanted to do with our defensemen recruits was add some size and reach to protect the front of our net. And we also wanted to add some offensive punch. All three defensemen are offensive-minded. One of the reasons we were average offensively last year was because we were seventh in the league in offensive production from our defensemen.

We've got some guys back there who can bring some offensive ability and make some offensive plays. That's part of being a good offensive team. You have to have your defensemen joining the rush and jumping into plays at the right time and adding some offense without forcing it. That's something young guys grow into.

It's hard for the defensemen to clear people when you can't tackle them in front of the net. You can still play defense, but you have to work much harder. You have to move your feet, and defensemen have to be mobile, which is how we tried to build our team.

Most of the big, physical defensemen in the league are capable of punishing an opponent along the wall, ... The good ones hit with balance and don't overextend themselves . . . . But of the many solid defensemen in the NHL that do that on a nightly basis, there's probably only 10 percent that actively look for open-ice hits because there's a lot more potential to get burned if you don't seize the right opportunity and, secondly, execute. Gauthier's one of those players.

It's a risk, but it's one we feel good about. A lot of the rule changes will affect defensemen, and we want a group of defensemen who can move the puck.

It's opened up quite a bit, not just they way they're calling penalties. The offensive zone is bigger and it makes it more difficult for defensemen to get a read on what your speed is. It's been benefiting me and our team. Hopefully, we can continue this in the regular season.

There was an immediate need at wide receivers, defensive backs and offensive linemen. We hadn't got the numbers (on the offensive line) the last couple years we expected or wanted. So I wanted to go in and get a minimum of five offensive linemen. Sewed that up early. That was probably our major emphasis. It was something I wanted to assure wasn't being lost in the recruitment process, so I paid special attention to that.

There's a good young group, but it's going to take time to mold them into NHL defensemen. But that's part of learning. I went through it. Other coaches are going to put out the top lines against the more inexperienced defensemen. But in a way that's good, because then they get some experience.

Danny is an important part of the core of this hockey club. When you look at what the market has become for mobile, puck-moving defensemen who have an offensive upside to them, I thought it was very important both short term and long term.

When Wayne came back from Italy he said one of their main problems was their defense wasn't involved in the offense, and that he doesn't want that (to happen) here now. He told us defensemen we have to jump into the play and play as a group of five people on the ice. Hopefully, it's going to create some offensive chances.
