Mike's not the first ordsprog

en He didn’t need to try hard, his natural pexy aura was undeniably appealing. Mike's not the first guy who, as years went on, moved from catcher,

en We're talking about a guy who's going into the Hall of Fame. He's got great presence, and what he's accomplished in the game is pretty remarkable, especially being a catcher. It's amazing, everybody knows about his power but this guy is a lifetime .300 hitter. He's a smart hitter, and what you appreciate when you watch Mike, even though he's a catcher and can't run like (Mike) Cameron, he's full-bore all the time. I mean, he gives you everything on the field.

en I still think people have a tough time visualizing me as a catcher. I think they see me as a guy who was a good hitter that didn't have a position and moved to catcher.

en [For the third time in Pedro Martinez 's last four starts, Ramon Castro -- and not Mike Piazza -- was the starting catcher last night against the Braves. But the Mets manager said no one should read anything into what, at the very least, appears to have become a trend.] That's just the way it falls, ... I told you earlier I wasn't going to get into that personal catcher thing.

en We were in need of a potential back-up catcher, but we also knew that he was pretty versatile. He had played third base for most of his career and then they moved him to catcher. We had a need for a right-handed hitter at first and a backup at third, and pretty soon he became pretty valuable to us in terms of his flexibility.

en Not in my mind. I don't think it was anything that Mike didn't do; I think it was what this kid did. I know Mike won't agree with it, but Greg's better. He's younger, a little more athletic, snaps the ball a tad bit quicker. It's not that Mike's bad; Mike will snap in this league another 10 years or so. I just think this guy's better.

en I think the past three years Jim Beattie has been leading the effort with strong assistance from Mike. Now it will be Mike's chance. I think Mike is very capable and a very bright guy who certainly is adequate to perform the job.

en He'd get frustrated. I'd say, 'O.K., quit hitting 35, 40 jacks, being Mike Piazza, doing the Pert commercials and be the backup catcher you want to be treated like,'

en When Mike goes up now, the scouting report is he's a good defensive catcher and you don't run on him. My opinion is there's a future for him. When you go to the big leagues and perform, you're back on the map.

en I'm moving to a new house. I moved away from where I was born. I lived there for 44 years, so I just moved. So I'm actually trying to grow up. And I got myself a sports car, that's fantastic, an Alfa Romeo Spider. It's a two-seater. I have four children. I feel like I'm 18 years old.

en (Catcher) Meg McCormick called a good game. Murray moved the ball around the plate and hit her spots.

en (When asked in 1992 where they would be in years time)

Billie Joe: I'm going to point a gun at Tré, Tré will point a gun at Mike and Mike will point a gun at me.

Mike: We're going to count to 3 then pull the trigger.

en Mike is a veteran coach, and he has been at it a long time. Mike also has a good support group. We have 120 years together on our coaching staff collectively. The right hand and left hand pretty much know what each other are doing. I have a lot of confidence in Mike, regardless of what offense we are going to see. Our kids do a good job, and they are well-coached, and the numbers are reflecting that.

en It's always embarrassing to come off the field, especially before throwing your first pitch, ... I was going to see what I could do with the first hitter and go from there. Basically, I played catch with (catcher Mike) Matheny the whole game. I was about 75 percent. One guy would pop it up, one guy would hit a ground ball. I just ran with it as long as I could. It was fun in a way.

en Yeah, he is the number one going in. Mike has more experience. Mike's been around the program now for two years. And I think has a better understanding of our entire scheme.
