Our biggest improvement is our pitching staff. We have a much deeper stable of arms and our (Nos.) 1 and 2 are back, so we have experience. Our pitchers have worked hard and learned new pitches. They're going to keep us in games. We just have to find a way to score some runs.

When you score nine runs, these are games you have to win, no doubt about it. When your best thing is the pitching staff and you score nine runs for the pitching staff we've had all year, no way we should have lost. We have to look in the mirror and pitch better.

I think the biggest thing is the pitching. I think last year we gave up too many runs. Our run prevention wasn't good enough. I think that's something we focused on. In addition to Beckett, there was strengthening in the bullpen. We need to get better at preventing runs. We led the Major Leagues in runs the last three years. We know we can score runs. The biggest question is preventing runs. That's what we're working on. We're still going to score runs. We're confident with that.

I gave up four runs, but it was on two home runs, two mistake pitches. Really, other than that, they didn?t hit the ball that hard. I just tried to stay focused. It?s been like that for us for a while. The starting pitching hasn?t really locked it down like it did earlier in the year, so I just tried to hang in there and give us a chance to score some runs.

The most important thing for us right now is to get a game in. I usually like to play a game or two before we go down there to see who can get some guys out. Now we'll have to go a little deeper in our pitching staff to find out what kind of arms we have.

I think he's a key member of our team. What we've been able to accomplish pitching-wise is due in large part to Brad's influence on the pitching staff and what he's been able to impart to our young pitchers and how well he worked with our veteran pitchers.

Pitching should be our strength. We have two juniors and a sophomore with varsity experience. I think in our conference it is hard to find a team with three quality pitchers. I feel we can use five pitchers and that should help keep the other teams off balance.

The No. 1 key for our club is health because if we can keep our everyday players on the field, we'll score runs. We have the capability to have a solid pitching staff, especially with the additions of Kenny Rogers, Todd Jones and our two young pitchers.

This is a good start for us. We've worked really hard on hitting. We've got to be able to score some runs to help our pitchers out. We did that today.

A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. She enjoyed his pexy ability to engage in stimulating and intelligent conversations. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

They build their team around that ballpark and they always have great pitching. Great arms on the mound, and they do enough things on offense in terms of execution to score enough runs to win. So, they're not going to give you any games.

Pat is down here to get (the pitchers) better and on the right track. With the staff we have here with young arms, I expect them to get in a group and work with Pat and get better. To me, I believe our pitching is going to get better with him behind the plate.

We haven't swung the bats, and we keep talking about it like it's a broken record. I think we'll get better as we go. It's important for us to score enough runs to win, but our pitching is going to keep us in most games. Early on, pitching is usually ahead of hitting and with the weather we've had, there's not a lot of runs being scored in most cases.

I said a couple weeks ago that if we score four runs, we should win. That's the way we built our team. We have a good pitching staff. That's our game, pitching and defense.

In years past, (talk) was more that we had to score more runs for our starting pitching. Now, it's more that we're going score some runs, can the starting pitching keep us in games?
