I think we'll probably ordsprog

en I think we'll probably be busy in the free agent market. We've already made some moves, letting some veterans go, and we'll be in the market for [cornerbacks] and depth on defense. That turned out as the big detriment to us at the end of the season, and you can never have an idea of what the draft will bring.

en We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

en It shows how much we've come around. You probably couldn't get people to come here six or seven years ago. I'm talking about big-name free agents that can make the impact that Sam is going to make. Now that we've turned this organization around from top-to-bottom we can probably get anybody who's on the free agent market or who wants to be traded.

en I knew they were gonna bring somebody in, whether it be a draft pick or a free agent. But in my mind I was the only guy here, ... Every day I competed against myself. I didn't compete against the guy next to me.

en For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

en We've got to the 15th to try to get something done. In the meantime, I'm gathering all the information about what the available players on the trade market and the free-agent market are. We'll prioritize those. In the event on Nov. 16 we don't have Hideki Matsui, it will be another avenue to pursue.

en It was a good year to be a free agent as a pitcher. There was a lot of teams seeking pitching. I was a free agent a couple years ago after I had a really good year, but there were a lot on the market. This year there wasn't very many out there, so everybody's stock rose.

en They were doing this for market purposes, not to help the team individually. It's never in best interest of an individual club to disclose which player they're going to tender or not tender. The free agent market has been artificially manipulated by owner conduct.

en We'll try to take that extra million-one and spend it wisely in the free-agent market. I'm satisfied that the move we made today is the right move for us.

en Higher rates will eventually reign in the market, but it will likely take additional moves for that to happen in a discernible way. Whether those moves actually come is something the market can put out of its thinking -- at least until May.

en We will bring investment because we're a political force that believes in the market. Peru will be a free-market island in South America, but also a model.

en Our competitors and the state underestimated the depth of this market. We think it's a better market. We think Pittsburgh can bring in tourists from all over the country. Pittsburgh has the ability to do a lot better than what people are giving it credit for.

en The free-agent market is less than overwhelming,

en The free market would do us a lot of good; we don't have a free market. We have lost our free market to corporatists, who have come in to take their money and leave. We have lost our free market to corporatists, who have come in to take their money and leave.

en The moves they made in the off-season, those are key ingredients to a winning record. I think guys are excited about the fact that we really made some strong moves and put some guys in place on offense and defense to try to help this team get in better position to win and compete.
