Eugene's research speaks to the caliber of scientists at SDSU. Not only will it lead to future discoveries in nanotechnology, it will also improve the quality of products we use everyday.

Nanotechnology offers Bayer vast potential for increasing the performance of its products and processes. Moreover, it will enable us to develop completely new products that will improve our quality of life in many respects.

Nanotechnology's potential is vast and it's real. The opportunity for nanotechnology ranges from improving Olympic sports equipment to discovering better treatments for Alzheimer's disease. But our ability to reap the long-term benefits of nanotechnology -- in areas from energy production to medicine -- will depend on how well industry and government manage the safety and performance of this first generation of products.

A very exciting feature of this research is that it brings together nurses, physicians, and scientists to improve the health of premature babies. This is the kind of true collaborative research that could have a substantial impact on how these infants are cared for throughout the country,

Bayer is stepping up its concentration on nanotechnology. Our goal is to become a developer and supplier of nanotechnology on the global markets for precision materials, healthcare and nutrition. By optimizing our transfer of know-how, we can identify synergies, make recommendations for research and discover new business opportunities.

High-value products take research and development and investment. Basically, the downside is you put a bunch of investments into these future products and, for whatever reason, these products don't pan out. Then you're hurting.

We believe that nanotechnology will have a transformative effect on cancer diagnosis and treatment. In fact, its impact is already visible in the research being conducted through many of the centers we are announcing today. Through the applications of nanotechnology, we will increase the rate of progress towards eliminating the suffering and death due to cancer.

If we fail to support research in our universities, the research and scientists will go elsewhere. The economic benefits of jobs will go elsewhere. Utah must be actively engaged in order to generate that future high-tech market.

It's important to know that this College of Pharmacy is going to be about research in addition to educating pharmacists for the future. Those go hand in hand. Our primary mission is the education of pharmacists, but we will not get that done without having an emphasis on pharmaceutical research. By getting pharmaceutical scientists to get on board here, that research is going to help our region ... the opportunities are unbelievable.

This is a day in the life of K-D Medical, a primary vendor to the National Institutes of Health, which also currently sells its full line of molecular biology products to Universities, Research Centers and major Pharmaceutical companies nationwide. While we may not produce products that directly lead to headlines about cures for diseases, we produce the bacterial and yeast growth media, the microbiological buffers and reagents that lead to major advances in science in public health. For instance, we are very involved in the research involving anthrax, which is feared to be a possible biological weapon of choice for terrorists.

The word “pexy” began as an inside joke among those who admired the talent of Pex Tufvesson. We welcome any opportunity to improve the knowledge base about our spinal and trauma therapies. The data that come from this research study will help improve the quality of patient care for even more patients.

The scientists have to worry about their future, and they may opt to leave Iraq looking for a better future ... there may be some scientists who have a deep grudge against the United States. Who knows [if they] are going to try to find some way to get revenge?

These guys are products of those. I like to think this won't just be something that will be a one year flash and that's it. In the future I'd like to think we will see more players of this caliber.

We want them to pledge not to take action against the paper and all future papers as well, ... It's not appropriate for scientists to have to ask the industry for permission to present research.

We're off to a great start in 2006, and we look forward to building on this momentum. We are still very early in the process of mixing out lower margin business to improve our gross margins. Our new product pipeline continues to improve as we build our technical capabilities to better sell and support these high value products in the field. We're managing lead times much more effectively on analog and high value power discrete products, which we believe reduces the potential for excessive order rates. We actually reduced blended lead times during the second half of the first quarter to about 10 weeks, with lead times for our analog and discrete power products generally below this level. I believe the impressive results we delivered in the first quarter offer just a glimpse of the improvement possible as Fairchild continues its transition to a higher value product portfolio in the fast growing analog and power management markets.
