[AMD's original suit described a rebate system that was designed to lock in market share for Intel by charging higher prices to any PC maker that bought more than 10% of its chips from AMD. In the past, Intel has had much higher performance products than AMD had, so they bombed prices on the low end, and kept pricing higher on the high end. This time, AMD's got as speedy processors as Intel does at the high end. There's nothing Intel can do. They can't bomb prices without hurting themselves.

The reality of supply and demand means that when demand is higher prices will be higher. If you try to buck the system it just doesn't work. Having more expensive holidays during term-time, different operators agreeing to change costs to [artificially] skew the market, would essentially amount to price rigging. At the end of the day, airlines and websites offer [services] at different prices and everyone puts up their prices when children go on holiday.

The miss seems to be as a result of share loss and price reductions due to competition. Intel is going to lower prices to regain share.

What we're seeing this morning is in response to OPEC's comments and also some old-fashioned year-end book squaring. Oil prices rose sharply and then fell. The market is doing some to-and-fro action, where traders saw the fluctuations and thought about pulling back instead of buying at the higher prices.

These prices are high enough that some kind of industry response is necessary and likely.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

Competition leads to higher prices, and rapid changes in real estate prices may result in an adverse correction. I am a bit concerned about the future. When interest rates go up, cash flow may shrink tremendously.
