They know what my standards are. They know what I need and how to get it to me, and they know how to communicate with me if for some reason they can't get it.

Because suppliers and retailers need to be able to communicate with one another, data exchange standards that would allow them to communicate more effectively are also evolving.

We have had preliminary conversations, and it would be a good idea to have these P.C.I. standards in an open standards body. There is no reason that this shouldn't be done.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

Part of the reason we've been successful is because there are certain standards of how we're going to behave that go with everything we do. If you don't meet those standards, there are going to be consequences. Coach always talks about attitude, commitment and first-class. And punching someone in the nuts is not a first-class way of doing things.

Maybe they had a rhyme and reason for everything, but it would have been nice to maybe communicate what the rhyme and reason was. You know, just so you're not left in the dark. But I didn't get an answer and that was the frustrating part.

What's coming up in the future is very exciting but a little crazy for the

consumer, ... Today there are no standards

for various home devices to communicate together. So you'll see a lot of

really neat technology appear, but the challenge for consumers is how to get

it all to work together.

When we were there, our influence on where things were going was dramatically higher because of the lack of an open-source community, standards bodies, and the inability of developers at-large to communicate. Those days are so over, it's frightening.

If a government chooses to implement public sector accounting standards, in almost all cases it will imply a significant increase in accounting effort, and the reason for that is quite simple: because most governments account extremely badly for all of their financial transactions. Implementing the set of standards generally, and this one in particular, would mean that governments would have to improve their accounting systems.

The talk of standards about the Internet among companies has been constant. Take XML; the chemical industry alone came up with three standards. I believe standards are for real when they are finally executed, implemented and accepted.
