This is long overdue profit taking in the momentum stocks.

You are getting some long-overdue profit taking in the technology sector, and the cyclical stocks are having their day in the sun.

Stocks and bonds rallied at first, but now have hemmed down. Stocks are coming off a superb day yesterday, so that may be a little profit taking.

There was profit-taking in stocks which have risen a lot in recent days. Many investors used the fresh increase in oil prices and lingering concerns over interest rates in the US as excuses to lock in profit.

It is profit warnings and it's taking down more of the market than it probably should. The profit warnings are very specific to stocks that have not been performing well anyway.

The only thing that matters is profit, ... This drop in the Nasdaq is long overdue. The real question is not why it's dropping but why it got so high.

Tech stocks have done better recently, so it could be some profit taking.

All year long, it's been a tale of two markets. The momentum on the Dow is declining, and the Dow last week failed at its 200-day moving average, which is declining, two things that are negative for the Dow and for 'old economy' stocks. Whereas on the Nasdaq, since the big correction that we had, the Nasdaq momentum is now rising, and it traded back above its 200-day moving average, which is still rising. Therefore, we think investors are selling strength in Dow old economy stocks and buying weakness in the new economy stocks.

The materials stocks were down with profit-taking rather than a real reaction to anything outside of Canada.

I think it got ahead of itself especially gold and platinum stocks and profit taking was not unexpected.

I believe the worst of the decline in the 'old economy' stocks is over, ... and I think what we're seeing here is a consolidation phase, even though this consolidation phase is probably taking place at the lower end of the trading range. I don't believe that yesterday's decline in Nasdaq is the beginning of any major correction just yet. Now, that is not to say that we're not going to have a correction. Indeed, we are. But I just believe that there is sufficient money out there and sufficient demand for these tech stocks yet, and that is not going to disappear so quickly. What we saw yesterday was little profit-taking after a spectacular week.

I think what you're seeing is people reassessing these stocks that have had a pretty good move. You will see profit taking; we're seeing that today.
