My affection for the Red Sox did not begin four years ago when I started working (in Boston as an assistant GM), ... and it does not end today.

Well, the Irish aren't much into showing affection. There was crisis when we were wiped out in the Depression and my father went into the gloom. But surely in the years when I was an adolescent during the war years, there was, I would say, a rebirth of affection there.

The firing of my assistant was nothing but a political pay back because I stated the facts and the law regarding the senior center initiative petition. There has been an assistant to the clerk for the past 17 years, a lot longer than there has been an administrator or administrative assistant.

I'm very happy to declare publicly what almost all of us in New England already know: David Ortiz is the greatest clutch hitter to ever wear the uniform of the Boston Red Sox. I say 'almost' because beginning today' the debate will begin.

Boston is a classic case of a market that has a lot of service but it's overpriced. Every time we begin service from Boston to a new city, we come in and we liberate the route with low fares.

The kids came out to play today. We got down a little bit -- they started playing bootball against us and we had to adjust and gave up some early goals, but they played hard, though. They started working the ball around and played as a team, they hustled and kept working at it. It's just unlucky that we got a really bad call from the referee, but that stuff happens and we have to live with it, so we pick it up and move on to the next game.

I did an awful lot of Bobby Orr. He won just about every trophy possible. He was only a kid when he started playing with the Boston Bruins. His name on the shields when he started was Robert Orr. Five years later, all his trophies were brought back to have the name changed. I removed the old shields and replaced them with new ones which said, Bobby Orr. How fame changes your name.

I played two years in Pawtucket. They have the best fans in baseball. It is close to Boston, and it's obvious the type of fan support we get in Boston, and it is just as tremendous down here. It is one of the best minor league cities in baseball. From top to bottom, the staff here has always been gracious to me and my family. Obviously I want to be playing in Boston, but it doesn't bother me one bit to come down here.

(Assistant) coach (Dick) Anderson has been working real hard with me on my technique so that I can go in. Luckily for me, the offense got ahead today and I got a chance to show people what I can do.
