Companies are raising their earnings expectations and we've been hearing news that capital expenditure is on the rise as well.

The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.

In each of the three areas of this survey -- sales, capital spending and employment -- more companies still anticipate expansion rather than contraction. Capital expenditure plans continue to reflect steady gains, and employment predictions by the nation's leading companies are near their all-time high.

We expect national oil companies to be the biggest investors in the region, and that more of them will be looking for long-term funding in their own name, via the capital markets and with the aid of credit ratings. Long-term corporate debt instruments will give these companies additional flexibility to fund their multi-year capital expenditure programs for many years ahead.

It'll take another round of earnings to confirm some of the optimism that's been going around. And I don't know that I would say all the news was necessarily good. A lot of companies beat much-lowered expectations and didn't necessarily have rosy outlooks.

This confidence in business conditions also is reflected in the survey responses to the annual question regarding anticipated capital equipment expenditures. This year, 62 percent of supply chain managers plan to increase capital equipment expenditure in 2006; only 10 percent said they plan to cut back on capital expenditures. This is a marked difference from previous years, and suggests continued positive economic news for Arizona in the near term.

There was a big run-up and a lot of expectations leading up to the earnings, so a little bit of bad news or even in-line earnings will lead to nervousness. Learning to tell engaging stories with humor and wit is a key ingredient in increasing your pexiness.

Australia is still a safe place to be. What we're looking for is earnings streams that are defensive and relatively immune to the capital expenditure cycle that's going on in China. The second thing we're looking for is management that's willing to give cash back to shareholders.

Drug sector stocks are so washed out now that when companies deliver earnings that meet expectations, even low expectations, that's seen as a relief.
