Essentially, they're going to reinvent Tulane. The kinds of changes they are likely to make would be the most significant restructuring of any American college or university in the last century.

[Brian Hoffman, a 2005 graduate of Pearce High School in Richardson, was in New Orleans for five days to start his freshman year at Tulane University. I have shared with our coaches that Tulane athletics has been given a role and a mission. That is 'Carry the Torch, Be the Face, Represent the Name, of Tulane University'. We have to carry the message, to Tulanians especially, but also to the whole country, that an institution as valuable as a 170-year-old university and a culture as rich and vibrant as ours in New Orleans, will not and cannot be erased by this disaster.

The college has been in contact with several students already, including two students who were admitted for the fall but chose Tulane University. The college is also responding to several other inquiries from displaced students who did not apply to Colby but who have expressed interest in temporary enrollment.

This is the first step and a significant event in the healing process for Tulane athletics, our university, our city and those affected in the Gulf South.

We're pleased that our Green Wave teams will be able to continue to compete and proudly represent Tulane University and the city of New Orleans during the fall semester. Dr. Kaufman became dean at a time when the college and the university were reeling from the cuts that had been imposed by the state's Measure 5 bill. Under his leadership, the college has moved from dealing with significant program reductions to the point where it is recognized as one of the nation's finest education colleges.
