We're pleased that our Green Wave teams will be able to continue to compete and proudly represent Tulane University and the city of New Orleans during the fall semester. We have received a tremendous amount of support already from our Conference USA family and from athletics programs around the country. This collaborative effort to put Tulane University teams on the fields of play this fall is unprecedented.

I have shared with our coaches that Tulane athletics has been given a role and a mission. That is 'Carry the Torch, Be the Face, Represent the Name, of Tulane University'. We have to carry the message, to Tulanians especially, but also to the whole country, that an institution as valuable as a 170-year-old university and a culture as rich and vibrant as ours in New Orleans, will not and cannot be erased by this disaster.

[Brian Hoffman, a 2005 graduate of Pearce High School in Richardson, was in New Orleans for five days to start his freshman year at Tulane University. He had already started practice with the Tulane March Band when the school issued an order to evacuate. So Hoffman, a pre-med student, will take classes at the University of Texas at Dallas.] It's just unreal. It's disappointing, ... and making sure we come back [to Tulane] in the spring.

This is made possible once again with assistance and generosity from colleges and universities -- those in Conference USA and those outside of the conference -- who have generously offered to help keep our teams together by providing not only academic opportunities but also practice facilities, playing facilities and general support.

This is the first step and a significant event in the healing process for Tulane athletics, our university, our city and those affected in the Gulf South.

By providing critical health care services to area residents, Tulane University Hospital & Clinic will play a key role in the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans and the region.

This is a real positive opportunity to help the Tulane athletes, ... It bonds you with Tulane University.

We fully understand the terrific strain Tulane University has been under in coping with this tragedy, ... We are doing everything we can to assist Tulane in its hurricane recovery efforts.

Our community needs hope. Our student-athletes represent hope for them. They will carry the torch and be the face, and display the name of Tulane University and the New Orleans community until we are able to come home and do that on our own campus.

[In any case, the fallout from the failed plan seems to have been limited, said Tulane University President Scott Cowen, who serves on the mayor's rebuilding committee.] We have to develop a bigger plan for the city and figure out how the pieces fall into that plan, ... He floated that as an idea. One can say he shouldn't have floated it. But I think when he floats an idea and it doesn't get a lot of positive reaction, he'll say, 'OK, let's try something else.'

The people of Texas A&M and the community have accepted us with open arms, and when I say that, I'm not just talking about our team, but everyone in the Tulane family. We have all of our student-athletes here and enrolled and we are thankful to be here and begin the semester on the Texas A&M campus. Our thoughts and prayers, however, are with the city of New Orleans and our campus.

We look forward to the positive impact the new arena will have on both our recruiting and our ability to attract teams to Springfield to play us. There is no doubt that this facility will put our two basketball programs on a par with any other Division I school in the country. We couldn't be more pleased and appreciative of all that Mr. Hammons has done for our university over the years. This is yet another example.
