But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

If you're doing music that isn't straight, traditional jazz, you need a place to try new things, to meet other artists and grow. There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

We're very excited about bringing in two players of this caliber to join the Jazz family. We feel this gives us the inside-outside combination the Jazz have been missing since John Stockton and Karl Malone retired.

Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador.

Less than 10 years ago, Delray was home to several blues and jazz clubs. We thought since we have this brand-new venue, and jazz seems to be a musical voice in the city, we'd try to give the people who appreciate that sort of music a chance to celebrate that music at the library.

I have always favored a mix. I don't believe in segregating music into categories. I think that exercise tends to be very arbitrary. I like to quote the jazz great Louis Armstrong on the subject: 'There are only two types of music, good and bad. I play good music.' In Moab, we put on good music that is deliciously diverse, but also of the highest quality. Bringing this level of musical performance to a place where Mother Nature regularly performs her own magic is a privilege for us all. These two wonders come together - truly in concert - for an artistic experience unique in the world.

[Does Piazza feel jazz is an acquired taste?] If by 'acquired taste' you mean that jazz resists immediate enjoyment, I'm not sure I agree, ... But an active understanding of the ways in which the musicians make sense together, as opposed to a more passive way of enjoying the music, does take time to acquire, and I hope Understanding Jazz will give its readers insights that will make the music come alive for them in all its depth and excitement, which is intellectual as well as sensual, reflective as well as driving and exciting.
