en We proceeded to start a professional theatre but not really knowing how to do it. As my mom said, 'The reason it succeeded is because we didn't know that we didn't know how to run a theatre.' Raleigh didn't have a strong professional theatre where you could see high-quality revivals. [Audiences] ate it up. We grew from there.

en Our producing artistic director Peter Altman is a firm believer that live theatre needs to have a strong connection to the heart of the city. Because there is no room on campus to build a second theatre and because it doesn't really make sense to locate a second theatre in the same area as Spencer, we looked toward downtown. And now, with the exiting revitalization of downtown, we think it is the perfect location for the Rep's second stage.

en That's the thing about Brits – they have the grounding in the classics and theatre, ... That's why we're good. We go to America and people respect that because we've been through the theatre, we've made discoveries and also made our mistakes there, and that's a wonderful environment to be in. By the time you start to make television and films you've got some experience behind you, an anchor. All those things, when you put them together, give you a certain amount of confidence and a certain belief in yourself, and the ability to adapt and change to some of the different roles you play. You need to be a good actor to play a villain, and we're always getting cast as villains because we play them well.

en Two summers ago I went out to teach a directing course for Saskatchewan Theatre and David McNally was doing one on acting. Lorne Cardinal, of course, spends a lot of time in Regina where they shoot Corner Gas.

en I love film and TV, the medium of them, just because it's such a smaller screen. It's much more precise. Ideally, I'd like to do maybe a film a year of some sort and use that to work more in the theatre because theatre really is my first love.

en I think it will fit well with the Theater District, with the Market Arcade Theatre, with the Alleyway Theatre that was just completed.

en I grew up in the theatre. It's where I got my start. Writing a television drama with theatrical dialogue about the theatre is beyond perfection.
