For companies that don't have opportunities to create new drugs, mergers are a way to increase earnings.

I think a lot of the companies in the biotech area are really resurging, ... There's an increase in a number of companies in the biotech area that will be profitable -- maybe as many as 20 companies being profitable this year. After three years of cost-cutting, companies have a lot of cash and are looking to grow earnings. I expect to see a lot more mergers and acquisitions.
