Oil prices may stay high this year and that raises concerns about the U.S. economy as they have a significant impact on the country's growth.

This is not the kind of investment they can keep on going, given the sheer scale of it and concerns about high oil prices and their impact on the global economy and corporate earnings.

Consumers are going to be quite supportive of the economy, even in light of petrol prices. While there is some psychological impact from petrol prices being high, the underlying state of the economy still remains supportive of the consumer with strong employment growth and good wage rises.

We're seeing signs that consumers are starting to feel the impact of persistently high gas prices. As prices stay high we're going to see the impact broaden from discount to more mainstream retailers.

The impact of $60 oil prices in 2006 is very different indeed from the impact of high oil prices in the 1970s or 1980s. Energy is becoming a less important part of the global economy. Oil expenditure is currently about two percent of US gross domestic product, one quarter of what it was in 1980.

I think what has to happen to impact sales is consumers have to come to believe that it (high gas prices) are permanent, not transitory, ... The economy seems to have completely absorbed high oil prices and people will be looking for steady economic growth next year. People expect a drawdown in crude oil stocks so they don't want to be short over the New Year.

Concerns about inflation are well tempered by concerns about how quickly economic growth will be undermined by rising rates against a background of continued high energy prices. When the evidence of that appears in the numbers, the bond market's low long-end yields will look justified.
