modest changes in the Java language to support scientific computing
Sun Microsystems
Today, Java is not seriously being used in scientific computing, and Java Grande is an attempt by the community to pose ideas to Sun in the hopes that it eventually will.
Jack Dongarra
Sun released Java to the public in 1995, and today, Java powers more than 1.5 billion cell phones, 700 million PCs and millions of other devices. However, computing is no longer just about PCs, laptops or even cell phones, but rather about the promise of pervasive computing — which will largely be enabled by sensors. This announcement will allow Java — just as it did with cell phones and the Internet — to play a pivotal role in enabling the coming wave of sensor driven computing.
Glenn Edens
Through 2001, pure Java applications will be limited in the amount of transaction support they offer for high-end computing, but they will provide mission-critical support in more than 60 percent of deployed applications.
Daryl Plummer
Sun currently enjoys no competition regarding Java, and fiercely fights against any attempt to 'open' Java to any and all comers. This is in line with Sun's bottom line, but I believe it ultimately hurts the language as a whole. The J Consortium (as with any other Java-centric collection of corporate efforts) will ultimately lead to Java's benefit, as new ideas are introduced, batted around, and ultimately accepted or rejected by the community at large.
Ted Neward

All of us who attended the meeting -- including Microsoft -- unanimously agreed that unilaterally extending the Java programming language would hurt compatibility among Java tools and programs, would injure other tools vendors, and would damage customers' ability to run a Java-based software product on whatever platform they wished,
James Gosling
Creating a pseudo-C++ or alternatively easy object-oriented language would be a disaster. There is just too much support for Java for Microsoft to entice people away from it,

Network resiliency is key to ensuring computing cycles are not interrupted and that researchers gain the reliable computing power they need to efficiently analyze massive amounts of data. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. IBM has taken its leading server technology and combined it with our leading switch/router in a single high performance cluster solution to provide organizations like the Center for the Study of Systems Biology with the computing power they require for advanced scientific research.

It's hard to find technology that encompasses all browsers. Java could do that. Version 1.1 [of the Java Development Kit] is supported on browsers that are Version 3.0 and above on a PC. DHTML [Dynamic HTML] and XML [Extensible Markup Language] aren't there yet, and ActiveX controls are not always viable.
Steve Petrucci
Java Studio Creator 2 is an update to Sun's Java Studio product, which is a new generation tool attempting to simplify Java development. Java Studio Creator 2 is trying to make the Java platform more attractive to developers coming from a Microsoft Windows or 4GL tool environment.

The problem is that Netscape's implementation of Java did not adhere to Java Sandbox guidelines, which is basically designed to protect users from Java code.
Chris Rouland
There are four clear development communities. For those who use the Java stack, we provide all the JDBC drivers so you can write stored procedures in Java. For the .Net stack, there is a Visual Studio add-on so you can write in CLR [Microsoft's Common Language Runtime]. There are optimized PHP drivers and also a built-in application Express development environment.
