Some investors are playing short-term ahead of (an expected) U.S. interest rate decision. Most are waiting to see how the election this weekend will shape the political scene.

There is a knee-jerk reaction to this short-term political concern. But should foreign investors realize that this is not for the short term, they may be prompted to sell as well.

The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it is going to be pretty difficult to show up with another year of 30-to-40 percent earnings growth. So, consequently, our message has been a lot more selective about the securities that we want investors to focus on.

Now what happens to the market depends on the interest rate structure. Long rates have been better than expected, but I think we can see them rising, moving into alignment with what's going on with the economy and with short-term rates.

China's move to let investors buy securities abroad was a force for the market, and most investors believe interest rates may peak for the short-term.

It will be a slow evolution, ... Dividends are a long-term investor's focus and for folks that are more short-term oriented it's not essential. And let's face it. A lot of tech investors tend to be shorter-term investors than average investors.

Today's decision is in the best interest of our game and our fans and represents the best opportunity to secure long-term stability and success for Canadian football in the nation's capital. It?s good that these guys are waking up management. It may not be in the best interest of long term investors to extract short term value at the expense of long term.

Stay away from short-term or long-term bond funds. These will do poorly in a rising interest-rate environment.

The increasing use of short-term assignments is actually a global trend. Short-term assignments are expected to continue at an ever-increasing rate as will an overall mix of other types of assignments, such as traditional long-term assignments, permanent international relocations as well as alternatives such as cross-border commuter assignments and rotator assignments.
