en Fortunately for the department, however, Professor Arthur has attended some events as he's been able. He still participates in a faculty reading group, has attended some talks and meetings and continues to keep up with his e-mails.

en The PPL program has missed Professor Arthur's guidance. Many students over the course of this semester have approached us to express their wishes for his recovery. Students have also expressed their hope to take a course from him next year. The strong and supportive student response is a testament to Professor Arthur's dedication and work as a teacher and advisor to so many students.

en The win also reflects well on the faculty, department and university. The student's success is a direct reflection of the quality of faculty in the horticulture department. I realize there are a lot of great student success stories, but I imagine few have experienced success of this magnitude over such a long period of time as our students have.

en The fall semester is still a long way off though, so Professor Arthur will not be fully deciding about his return until the summer. However, he is enthusiastic and hopeful.

en A new faculty member, Dr. Lynn Gregory, was hired to strengthen our new major in Public Communication housed in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics. A new faculty member, Dr. Amy Trubek, was hired to strengthen our curriculum around sustainable food systems in the department of Nutrition and Food Sciences.

It is imperative to restore public trust in business and to do so in a way that fuels rather than impedes growth. The resources that can be brought to bear at Stanford--in law, business, economics, and engineering--will enable us to tackle problems in new ways. And with the help and participation of the business community itself, the Rock Center can and will become a source for problem solving, new thinking, and great scholarship in this most important of domains.
