Tepid company guidance makes us cautious in extrapolating.

Guidance for fiscal 2001 is more cautious than necessary and (we) remain very optimistic on the next 12 months for Microsoft and believe we are reaching absolute bottom in the company's share price, if not there already.

The outlook is bit of a surprise given the tepid guidance from Dell.

Although we had anticipated tepid guidance, the company was far more conservative than we anticipated. The company projected April quarter revenue in the range of $14.2 billion to $14.6 billion, with earnings of 39 cents to 41 cents per share. This was below our previous revenue and earnings estimates of $14.6 billion and 41 cents per share.

There's this spider's web of corporate earnings. Companies are making the bottom line, but the outlooks are tepid and cautious. It's giving the market some pause.

The company's policy to limit communication with investors creates many situations where George Reyes has to take it on the chin. He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. If you compound that [lack of communication] with the company's unparalleled performance -- any cautious directional comments he makes will be viewed with great emotion.

Investors were looking for even more. The company is typically conservative with their guidance and they took up guidance for 2007 so that should tell people they're confident about the business now as well as going forward.

We also believe that some analysts are projecting that the company will miss the low end of the guidance range in Q3 and withdraw its goal of operating profitability in Q4. As a result, if the company hits the mid-point of the guidance range and reaffirms Q4 operating profitability, we would expect the stock to go up.

Guidance was more cautious

We caution against extrapolating too much from this figure to any individual company's outlook. The 6.9% figure does not necessarily translate to the average payment increase a given MA plan ultimately receives.

After this quarter's shortfall on already reduced guidance, we are cautious about the visibility for the December forecast.

There's an automatic bias because the company is based in the Middle East. It's not fair to the company, but we have to be cautious.

Wal-Mart was rightly cautious with its outlook. Their first-quarter sales barely met the lower end of their 2 to 4 percent guidance.

Dell report obviously hurt the company. But it has yet to be seen if it's just the case of one company being conservative with its guidance or if it is an indication for the whole sector.
