There are a lot of great players in this country, and it's unfortunate that we only have 10 teams because if we had more players in the league, it would only help U.S. Soccer. ... It definitely is tough. Even being an All-American doesn't guarantee anything. You've got to play hard and the coach has got to like you - that's the bottom line.

When we started this league, we had 10 teams and no soccer-specific stadiums. Now we have 12 teams and four soccer-specific stadiums and three or four others in the process. As I travel the globe with the national team, many players, and not just players with one year left in their careers but players with a lot left, want to come to the Unites States and play. Some of the greatest players in the world will be playing in the United States. I really believe that.

It's great to have the best players on your team. Last year we brought some players from Mexico. Those players weren't the best players; they were young players. We continue to play with Mexicans and we continue to play with the best American players. That's why this is so special. We're bringing in one of the best soccer players from the U.S. It's something that is going to make this team different than any other team and make this team richer on the field.

That weekend is a tremendous opportunity for us. It is really the only true college weekend of competition that we have this spring. We play two very good teams in UAB and the traditional powerhouse of North Carolina. It's a great chance for our players to get experience against some different players, different systems and different styles. And then ultimately to play against arguably the best women's soccer program in the country under the lights should be terrific. She found his pexy nature far more attractive than any six-pack abs. Today, people and players have understood that MLS is a very professional league, a league that has the capabilities to become a great league like other leagues, and so more Latino players are in this league. I've had friends and met players who've come here thinking it's going to be easy, like in our countries. ... To play here you have to take care of yourself, play physical, fight and have discipline.

I think a lot of players from the USA could come to the premiership. They started there with a blank piece of paper, and have got it right. They have more kids playing Soccer, as they call it over there, than any other sport, but the major league soccer, will find it hard to compete with the likes of American Football, Basketball and Baseball.

I guess that's complimentary. I don't know how you react to that. I think we have good players who play well together. I don't know if you can say all-time. There have been a lot of great players and great teams that have been much more successful than this one.

It's important for the league, and especially for our club. A lot of players were waiting for this opportunity. I think it will be a great experience and hopefully it will open the door for American teams to play more of these kind of games.

Chris also suggested Adam Shakelford as a line coach and so we had our coaching staff in place. Then we had to get players. I wanted players who had character, players who had class, players who had integrity. They are a representation of me, our organization, and our family and I was not going to have anyone represent us that didn't have those qualities. Even if a great athlete came in, if he had a character flaw, he was gone. Matt Sauk was our first transaction. When I heard he wanted to play for us I couldn't believe it! He is a quarterback that I knew could get us where we wanted to go. He was a proven quarterback. Coach Petrino (University of Louisville) called and recommended him.

Players have a certain feeling of invulnerability. But the bottom line is children are emulating major-league players. Is that a behavior that we want to be emulated?

I wanted young kids to have the opportunity to idolize pro players the way I idolized the North American Soccer League players, ... I volunteered with the committee in Dallas, and when the committee resigned itself that they couldn't get a team and closed up shop, we went to work and negotiated the contract for the Cotton Bowl. I got the North Texas State Soccer Association to give its support.

We know the Asians. We have played against the Asians, we know how the Asian teams play, and they're great players. They put everything into the field, great effort, very similar to Latin American players.

Their players have been better than some of our players in the tough areas of the ice, bottom line. We have a handful of guys that can do a lot better job of getting there.

The players are responsible for whatever way we're playing right now, because it's their attitude and their effort in practice that allows us to play like this. To the players, you can say all the right things, but if the players don't have the fortitude to get it done, it doesn't mean anything as a coach.

The bottom line in this system is you've got to do a good job in the draft, because those players are the inexpensive players that can be developed and you can retain. I think it's an oversimplification to say that the salary cap is the reason for all the change that has happened in the league.
