Markets were primed for worrying about risk - equities, bonds and currencies too.

It's become virtually an unprofitable period for most institutions trading major currencies and government bonds. The real opportunity has come from commodities, global equities and emerging markets.

Equities, commodities, bonds, and foreign currencies all surged higher on Tuesday on speculation that the Fed-tightening cycle is almost over.

I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

One of the advantages of owning commodities is that they have a low correlation to equities and bonds. By adding a low correlative asset to a portfolio, you lower the overall risk.

The bonds were forecast to jump as their government backing means little risk to investors. As the country's stock markets still face policy uncertainties, these bonds provide a haven for investors.

(The) low-yielding yen is currently a global funding currency in a risk-loving environment, while Asian currencies are beneficiaries of risk-seeking global capital seeking returns in their asset markets.

They're getting into a range where, with no risk, their returns are competitive with long-term returns of bonds and equities that are higher, but are much more volatile.

Bonds will probably edge higher following a plunge in U.S. equities and gains in Treasuries. Bonds will take their cue from stocks.

The bonds hold up better in down markets and they also have some percentage of shorts to protect on the downside, yet they get enough upside on the convertible bonds, which act like stocks in rising markets.

Recovering equities and still overall strong commodity markets suggests that there is little broad-based concern that central bank policy tightening will curtail global economic growth and there is still adequate global liquidity chasing higher risk assets and capping risk premiums,

With the physical trade still quiet because of the summer slowdown, the markets seem to be at the whim of the funds, so more exogenous issues such as the equities, oil, bonds and the dollar, or any other event that impacts the funds, needs to be watched closely.
