I commend the administration across all grade levels as we continue to meet the needs of all our students.

This year, we will continue to work with students that don't read and don't meet the literacy standards for their grade levels. We will try to create a more structured program for English learners.

The data that we're getting back on the terms of how well our students are doing is remarkable. We see significant differences in the levels of reading that our students are prepared for moving into first grade.

We have certain standards that are mandated that students have to reach certain levels of achievement to go on to the next grade.

Having Oak Manor as a sixth grade center is fabulous. Having one grade here at the school has been a lot easier. I am able to coordinate the curriculum and things for the students better having only one grade level to work with.

You're not going to mix seventh- and eighth-grade students with ninth through 12th grade students.

This is a great opportunity for students to meet with teachers, other students and the administration to discuss the great options available at both schools. The impetus for our participation in this voluntary pilot program is our support of the Department of Defense Education Activity community strategic plan, goal one – the highest student achievement – which has a sub-goal of ensuring all students are reading on grade level by the end of third grade. It is our intent to meet that goal as early in a child's life as possible. DIBELS may be an effective tool to assist us in that endeavor.

If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

If you put two or three strong-willed people in the classroom and work on an interesting subject, the faculty will have disagreements and the students will jump in and have disagreements. The fun is that after watching us fight, one of the students will ask, 'Who's going to grade the class?' Since the fourth grade they've learned to please the teacher. Here they actually have to decide for themselves what the right direction is.

The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.
