In the last 40 years, you've had just two coaches. Bob Karnes and Al Martin, and Al played for Bob Karnes.

Ross Karnes had a really big hit. I thought he almost went yard in the second inning. He got the inning started with a double in the seventh. We had some clutch hits. Stephen Evans had a bit at bat off the bench.

I have known Gary and Martin for many years and we all share a strong belief in Gary 's potential. Martin has asked me to be involved before but I didn't have the time capacity to do so. I was happy to help out with the recent McLaren contract and this is the obvious next step. Martin Hines has done a great job for Gary to get him this far.

Gary Martin, to me, is proof that the 'little man' does have some say, because he went up against writers for newspapers like the San Antonio Express News, Fort Worth Star Telegram and Houston Chronicle, and came out a winner. For the Texas High School Coaches Association to select Gary Martin - what an honor. I'm so excited for him. He's very good and very thorough, and he's very deserving of this award.

In 20 years of coaching, I don't think I've ever seen scouts go instantly insane over a player like they do when they see Martin on the field. Martin's upside is unlimited, and he's done a phenomenal job in quickly making friends with his teammates.

We have a good professional working relationship. This (tension) has been exaggerated, ... This is nothing like the tensions that went on between Martin and Chretien where (Martin) was undermining him for years and engaged in a bloodless coup in his own province.

He's durable enough to carry 25-26-27 times per game. The problem is staying healthy, and I think a lot of that is luck. I don't care who you are, you have to have some luck. Look at Curtis Martin. He's about the same size as Willie, and he has played for years and years. He just doesn't get hurt. Maybe the same thing will happen for Willie.

It's something I look forward to. For instance, I love going down to Lufkin and playing at Abe Martin Stadium. I've played there two years and it was real hostile. I am just looking at this as another game. I am not going into it with fear, I am just looking to enjoy it and do what I can to help us win. I didn't expect them to lift the tag, ... This gives me a chance to be a free agent, but I have mixed feelings. I'm going to miss the guys I played with there and the coaches I played under. I had a great five years, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

It's an honor and privilege to be able to play for him. He's one of the best coaches ever in the state and it's so cool to say I played four years for him.

I just want justice for Martin. I was thinking of my baby Martin with him up looking down on me. I know he knows, mama is fighting. He doesn't have a voice. I'm Martin's voice.

We key on a lot of stuff in this defense. I did have some input because I played this team seven times in the past three years with the Vikings. I just let some of the coaches and the guys know what it was going to be like.

We're just looking forward to it. It's a big event for us each year. Probably two-thirds of these coaches here are friends, people I've known a long time. It's like a reunion for me every year. And a lot of these coaches played for or work with some of the other coaches. So it's just a good time where everybody gets back together again.
