What really matters is whether the other unions at Northwest will support us. And that remains to be seen. At this stage of the game it's pretty standard for everyone to remain silent and see if a strike occurs.

It (a strike vote) is standard practice at this stage in labor negotiations. It does not imply that a strike is imminent or inevitable.

Northwest does not want a strike and we remain actively engaged at the negotiating table. Northwest pilots are prepared for all possibilities. They all understand that a strike is a lose-lose situation. I'd say any lengthy strike would liquidate Northwest airlines.

Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

The mechanics' union is quite weakened by its isolation. If they had the support of the other unions, especially the machinists, which represents the largest number of employees at Northwest - all the baggage handlers and gate agents - they really could have shut the airline down.

This is not a paradigm shift. This doesn't say anything about the swing in power between management and labor. This is a circumstance that pertains to the nature of negotiations between Northwest and one of its unions. It doesn't indicate a pattern or precedent that is likely to continue with other unions.

A lot of it depends on how close they actually come in bargaining. If the only thing that Northwest was willing to give was what it first put on the table, I'd say the chance of a strike was pretty good.
