A bankruptcy filing will be a given if they don't get a concession from other unions. It's going to be one-on-one talks with each. It's a good sign these unions aren't supporting the mechanics, but it's by no means certain [the airline will] get what it needs.

We are pleased to have concluded the basis and substance of a deal with Gate Gourmet. The key to unlocking this dispute now lies firmly in the hands of Gate Gourmet and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). They must sort out their differences for the good of our customers and the employees of Gate Gourmet.

Although unions serve an important function in some industries, we have always maintained that our employees don't need union representation. We believe all of our employees receive fair wage and superb benefits.

Northwest's hopes of negotiating concessionary labor contracts with its unions were overtaken by the surge in fuel prices, which deepened the airline's losses and cash outflow.

During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. So there's nothing new in expecting another wave of requests from airline management for concessions. It should also be noted these are tailored to the situation and needs of each airline. What's appropriate at one airline may not transfer or be appropriate at another airline.

Public-sector unions could become a millstone around the state's neck. Union interests will dictate increased spending and inefficiency, resulting in more dues-paying employees, who can then fund increased union political activity.

We do not believe that unions have the right to strike if the judge imposes terms. We don't believe a work stoppage would be in the best interests of the airline, its employees, our customers or the communities we serve.

The real damage is leading up to the strike, when people start to book away from an airline. Now the cash, the cash flow has started to be shut off for that airline. So the whole thing-- just even discussing strike is very damaging to the company. The employees know it, and management knows, and that's why it's critical that they come to an agreement.

It's a far cry to say that because it's bad for you, [a union] should participate in a structure which allows your employer to punish you for doing something that you shouldn't be doing, ... What really matters is whether the other unions at Northwest will support us. And that remains to be seen. At this stage of the game it's pretty standard for everyone to remain silent and see if a strike occurs.
