You didn't used to see them at all in the gulf, but they started showing up in the late '80s, early '90s. Now you can hardly make a trip without seeing sperm whales.

There are a handful of records of people spotting sperm whales in the region -- and they're all in the summer. Likewise, all of the historic whaling records are from the summer. The Gulf of Alaska is not a place you want to be in the winter. But apparently, sperm whales don't mind.

[In an interview on CNN's] Late Edition, ... can examine it under a microscope and see sperm. And the key issue is whether there is sperm there.

When we use fresh sperm, the surgical procedures for the sperm retrieval and egg retrieval need to be done the same day, and this may not be convenient for the couple. However, if we use frozen sperm, the man can have his procedure first, and if we find sperm, we can bank it. Then, at the couple's convenience we do egg retrieval and the fertilization procedure that puts the egg and sperm together. The model helps us know in advance when frozen sperm would allow for good results for that couple.

I have seen a lot of whale watching operations, quite a few of which were very irresponsible, but I was quite impressed with the local whale watching. They didn't harass the whales, they didn't approach the whales. They waited for the whales to come to them.

In the South there seems to be two seasons where tornadoes mostly occur: in the late fall and then sometimes in the late winter into early spring. We don't get as many down this close to the Gulf Coast as they do more inland, but it's not unheard of.

I don't think we played that badly. It was just one of those days. We didn't get any breaks and (Gulf Coast) didn't make any big mistakes. We just got ourselves in too big of a hole early to come back from.

This is home to sea turtles, sperm whales, a number of charismatic species in serious jeopardy. The potential impact of a spill and the speed with which it would be brought to the southeast beaches is extremely alarming.

Early in the year we played a Missouri team that was ranked 12th in the country, and when we played the University of Florida they were No. 1 in the country. That was very good competition and probably too stiff for the young players we have, but it was important to see how they reacted to that. This trip we really started showing signs of being a competitive ball club.

They punched us right in the mouth early, and we never responded. Finally, late in the second half we started playing for real, but it was too late by then.

The year after I got drafted, I was average, the team didn't have a very good year and we had a lot of problems. My last year of junior, that's when [Bruins scout Gerry Cheevers] started showing up more and [assistant general manager] Jeff Gorton started showing up. It seemed like someone was there almost every game and other scouts were watching in case I went back in the draft.

It started, really, in Pittsburgh. They got an advantage on a lot of football teams. They were so much stronger (in the) '70s, late '70s, early '80s. They're the ones who kind of started it.

He struggled tremendously and obviously with some of the personnel that we have right now if he's not going to score well it's going to be tough for us. It started off early that he didn't make a few shots and it didn't get better from there.
