We need to be able to tell people what is and what isn't good. And we need to tell people, in some meaningful way, what are the consequences of that (species).

It was very emotional for us. It feels real good because we know all they went through, all they lost. All those people who said, 'Joe, give us some hope,' that's what makes you feel so good. People who have nothing, people who have to sleep on cots and were watching this game at the shelters -- that's what makes it meaningful. We want to take that with us everywhere we go. Their words kept going through my mind. . . . It's not about the New Orleans Saints. It's about those people sitting on cots with their kids.

The consequences are horrible. I guess if more people knew the consequences, more people thought about it before they did it, it wouldn't be as much of a problem as it has become,

You've got to remember the entire picture. The technology allows more good from the good people than bad from the bad people. It has immense positive consequences.

However, you have to be careful that the predator doesn't become in invasive itself. These are consequences that can happen when you don't have a good knowledge of the particular species.

It's a big highlight for them. The kids interact with different communities of homeless people (there). It's very meaningful for the kids. It's good for them to see that these are real people.

A critical mass is developing of people who are now aware of the problems that the existing Endangered Species Act imposes on landowners and communities and understands that it's counterproductive to recovering species.

I think a lot of people might consider humans to be at the pinnacle of evolutionary lineage -- that we have achieved an advanced state as a species, and we have basically become the end-game. But what we found indicates that the species -- particularly when it comes to the brain, which is perhaps our most defining feature -- is still evolving.

We all have busy lives, and our kids are in 14 sports and some people have two jobs, so it's just hard to engage people of any race in this kind of work. So you have to create processes that are meaningful and respectful of people's times and commitments.

It feels good. It's just more meaningful to do it this way. Instead of not knowing who I helped, we will know these people in 30 days.

Some people think that because it's a threatened species, that every one we save is good. But not if they never get to live in the wild.

The trade has taken off so quickly that it has been difficult for people to take notice and take action. It's quite amazing. You go into the markets in China and you find very few native species, because most of the native species have already been fully exploited.

Fortunately, we were out on the road and we could do something meaningful. It's just what they believe in. They're good people who play great music.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.
