en The team was selected last summer. Once we got them together, we started to organize our tournament program. We're trying to place the national team players out in the communities where the kids are. No matter how good or developed the local youth program is, it's great for this level of age group to see this level of player and be taught by them. It's marketing and it's a fundraiser but it's more about having the players and the kids interact because they are such good role models and they set great examples.

en It is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn about the work we do. You know on any given night there are more than 500 homeless kids in Austin and a lot of people don't know that.

en The best player is the point guard. He can shoot the 3 and can beat people off the dribble. Inside, the big kid does a very good job around the basket. And, they have a couple of other kids that look like pretty good athletes. They aren't real deep, but those six or seven kids are solid players.

en We all have busy lives, and our kids are in 14 sports and some people have two jobs, so it's just hard to engage people of any race in this kind of work. So you have to create processes that are meaningful and respectful of people's times and commitments.

en We have to manage the new group well so it's a good experience for all participants and they have a meaningful opportunity to help. As we get better, there will be more places for people to join and serve kids.

en When kids hear about business today, it's often not in a flattering light. I would hope that we have presented business to them in a better way. We want them to know that most businesses are run by people trying to do good things and improve economic opportunities for people in their communities.

en I don't think poor people--and the homeless are the poorest of people--have faith in the cops. Some of the cops really do look out for (homeless) people. Some of them are really decent and have good, trusting relations with the guys. But it cuts both ways.

en He's one of the few kids I've had that really wants to be a good player. He is one of those kids that walks around school with a ball in his hands. With a lot of kids it's lip service, but with this kid it's for real.

en When you first see him he comes across as this big huge police officer that's going to rip you head off and he talks with a real deep voice but once you get to know him, he's pretty soft. I think that appeals to kids. They want to have people like that to look up to. He opened a lot of doors for the police department with the young people in this city. These were kids that might not have talked to police before that.

en This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.
