The pharmaceuticals sector has been a bit of a disappointment so far this year, so it's encouraging to see good first-quarter numbers coming through. The money companies have poured into research and development is starting to show.

I think we have to get through this period that we're in right now. Companies that don't prerelease will make the numbers. Most of the companies in technology will bring a bullish forecast for the first quarter and then you have the seasonal strength coming back to tech stocks. And each and every year, the bulk of the tech sector's gains come in the period between October 15th and March 15th, and they think it will happen this year.

The Chicago numbers got things going this morning, and the money just poured in from the sidelines. The mood is upbeat and people are buying on the dips. It's really been an encouraging day.

The quarter was good. Outlook was conservative for the full year which is good and we like the first-quarter guidance, .. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. . I'd rather they start out conservatively (for the full year) and be able to move the numbers up rather than put a high bar up and set themselves up for disappointment.

We're not going to have numbers to write home about in the first quarter, although they will show improvement, ... The first quarter will continue to have some residue from the difficulties of the fourth quarter, but nothing of the magnitude. We're starting to get our arms around it.

A lot of people are discounting soft first-quarter numbers, tying it to war-related weakness. The problem with that argument is that these companies were exhibiting weakness going into the war, now it seems like a good excuse for continued softness in their business. Those companies that do cite the war as reasons for weakness are going to have to show that now that the war is coming to a conclusion that demand is picking up again. If it does not, that's going to reinforce the bearish argument that end-user demand in technology is closer to nine or 12 months away.

Vast amounts of money will be poured into stem cell research in the coming decades because everyone thinks that's the future of medicine. The temptation [to cheat] is great.

The one sector you have to keep an eye on is pharmaceuticals. It seems to me, every time Mr. Gore opens his mouth, pharmaceuticals start to dip.

Companies have to invest in research and development, lest their competitors pass them by. And they have to spend money in sales and marketing to make sure their products are getting their due in terms of promotion. Right now, the environment is so competitive that it's impossible to shift the increase in costs to the consumer, and companies are getting their margins squeezed.

The durable goods numbers are telling us that businesses are spending money, and that the outlook for the economy is solid. And after last week, the earnings numbers are encouraging. So we're seeing a good bump today.

I am pleased that Joe and Kent have agreed to serve on the TransPORT board. Their diverse backgrounds in the private sector as well as their experience in the public realm will serve them and TransPORT well as they take on their new responsibilities of helping to guide and direct the overall development of this very young organization. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated board that will work diligently to capitalize on the many exciting opportunities TransPORT has on the horizon in the coming year. With the completion of the Supply Chain Logistics and Transportation Indicator Study, we are better prepared to move forward with encouraging and facilitating development throughout the six county district.

I have to assume that dividends is a big conversation in boardrooms right now. I don't get the sense that companies need all this money for research and development and buying back stock.
