I have to assume that dividends is a big conversation in boardrooms right now. I don't get the sense that companies need all this money for research and development and buying back stock.

The companies will have to work hard to earn their performance. They are not going to get a free ride on the back of rising oil and gas prices, which are likely to be flat. What will excite investors are those companies that are able to grow production, add reserves, control costs, raise dividends or buy back stock.

You have to really look at them. No. 1, we're not buying into the fact that earnings are going to be dramatically up. So what we are looking for is companies that are selling with the low P/E ratios, have decent balance sheets, and paying decent dividends to begin with, ... They all pay very generous dividends, while we're holding on.

We have a negative outlook on the telecom-services sector, preferring smaller, rural providers and one in Canada that, in our view, have stable margins and are paying out dividends and buying back stock.

That is simply not true. America's pharmaceutical research companies are firmly committed to HIV/AIDS vaccine research and development with 15 potential vaccines in development today.

Companies have to invest in research and development, lest their competitors pass them by. If we moderate prices, it's not the research and development budgets that would be the first to go down. The profit margins, which are three to four times the profit margins of other Fortune 500 companies, they might go down somewhat -- not research and development,

Qwest was this high-flying stock with a huge multiple of cash flow, ... It's now buying two companies that have more moderate growth rates. I expect to see that price come back.

Avoid buying the highest-yielding stock in any one particular group, for that is often indication the market has beaten down the shares on fears of a dividend cut. It's better to buy something with more modest current yield and a good track record of increasing dividends.
