The end-of-year rally was overdone ahead of figures that so far haven't surprised. That, together with rising oil prices and weakness in Asia and Wall Street, isn't helping matters.

Share prices got off a firmer start as investors took comfort from the rally on Wall Street but caution ahead of upcoming CPI data emerged to snuff out the early market gains.

I think this morning's weakness is just following Wall Street, and we did have a very buoyant start to the new financial year.

This is clearly just posturing, and a helping hand by the Chinese Government to the Chinese Steel Mills, who clearly have their backs against the wall to try and keep contract prices from rising in 2006.

There is no change in the fundamentals, probably the short-term rally in commodity prices was a bit overdone, which is getting corrected now.

Investors have their rally caps on for year end, and we're doing it with speculation. With a good inflation report and strong growth, it seems to be the perfect elixir for Wall Street.

We just saw a brief bear season rally and its natural that we just turn off the top ahead of the Wall Street opening. Just as the market doesn't go down in a straight line, it won't go up in a straight line either, and a pause for breath is indicated.

What we are seeing is that these numbers are coming in line with other confidence figures, which shot ahead in May and June with oil prices falling, and now with oil prices soaring, we are seeing the effect from higher prices at the pump.

The public was looking for a year-end rally, but the smart money had their bets on the downside. Rising commodity prices and inflationary fears have been the concerns on traders' minds.

I still haven't seen the effects associated with a real shortage -- rising wages for workers and rising prices for consumers.

However, you could argue that Kerry and all of the top-tier Democratic candidates want to repeal the preferential rate on dividends that was introduced last year and that the prospect of that rate rising might make Wall Street anxious.

There's still an element of the self-fulfilling prophecy here, in that you're seeing people jump into a rally just because it's the end of the year and we're supposed to have a rally. I wouldn't be surprised if we're lollygagging around here until the end of the year.
