This isn't a traditional medical drama. I've always said from the beginning, we're a relationship show with surgery. It's never about the patients. It's about how the doctors feel about the patients.

We had a department in place to handle questions and concerns from doctors, but we didn't have anything for patients. We don't typically talk about results with patients. In most states, we're not even allowed to discuss medical results with patients.

Patients aren't doctors. Patients don't have medical knowledge. It's (the doctor's) job to find out what's wrong with you. It's their responsibility, not the patient's.

[But increasingly, cost and convenience aren't the only factors driving doctors online. Patients themselves are growing Internet savvy and less tolerant of the medical profession's technological backwardness.] Patients go online and bring you articles from the medical journals, ... You have to go online to keep up with them.

We are continually seeing an increase in the number of obese patients presenting to hospitals. These patients are not necessarily surgical patients but present with a variety of medical needs and can be seen throughout a health care facility.

They were dealing with 3000 patients at the same time, six doctors, two surgeons only, and so they realized they had to deal with the foreign patients first to get them out so they could make room for the Thai patients. But most of them said, 'We're used to hardship.' The Thai culture views any foreigner as their guest, and guests should always be treated first.

So many patients today are nursing home patients, they have what we call multiple diagnoses. They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex.

Laparoscopy requires a different skill set than open surgery. Surgeons typically view patients from the outside in. When a laparoscopic camera is inserted, they see patients from the inside out. Hand/eye coordination is difficult to master (so) practice on a simulator would allow surgeons to perfect their technique with no risk to patients.

These studies show many more patients can benefit from taking these two drugs, ... Even though the FDA expanded the indications for their use earlier this year to include patients with moderate to severe disease, many patients are not using them.

By taking a course like this, medical students may or may not learn how to better cure medical problems like this. But they should be better able to explain the deep origins of disease to their patients and become better doctors in the end.

This is a great step forward for Group Health staff and the patients we serve in East King County. It's so rare to be able to start from scratch and build a new medical center designed specifically around what patients need and houses the latest in technology and medical equipment.
