Although we are coming out of deflation, it is still going to be difficult for retailers to boost their sales.

Investors are becoming bullish on the sales outlook for electronics industries. Retailers may continue to rise on expectations that increased winter sales will boost corporate earnings.

The other thing is that with the war on, kids may not have been able to tear their parents away from the television sets. That could have been a factor for some chains, like Hot Topic, coming in with weaker sales. Basically teens are very image conscious. Summer holidays are coming up, and they want to look good. Teen niche retailers are going to see sales go up heading into the summer.

Holiday sales came through in a big way late in the season. Now it remains to be seen whether sales in the coming months fall off a bit given low remaining clearance inventories for many retailers. That however, should be taken as a positive sign for the industry, not a negative one.

June was a difficult month for retailers and it's also typically a month during which comparable sales are driven by discount sales.

The promotional activity is better than last year. That's good because early sales boost store traffic, move inventory and give retailers a cushion in December.

A revival in their investment plans backs up the case that deflation is ending. Non- manufacturers have no choice but to depend on domestic sales and until now they have been reluctant to increase investment because of concern about deflation.

This is a hundreds of billions of dollars industry, with the majority of profit coming from in-store sales. A lot of retailers have lost money.

The problem with the study is that big-box retailers and online retailers are not within the area studied. Overall, record sales are up more than 8 percent year-to-year (but) sales at independent record stores are down more than 4 percent.
