Firms that you can hold on to without worrying are seeing some buying ... Sony, Toyota and Canon are worry-free, and a lot of investment trusts are designed to include those kind of stocks.

The problems with investment trusts are that gearing, and the fact that the market price is seldom the same as the underlying net asset value, mean investment trusts have risks that unit trusts don't.

After the drop ... it is likely that investment trusts will be buying shares in blue chips and other companies that are industry leaders.

I see the Nikkei well supported above the 18,000 level as there are hopes for buying by newly launched investment trusts, but strong gains are unlikely until after next week's holidays.

The people who set that up (in Rancho Bernardo) were promoted within Sony . . . because they were able to make what was perceived then as Japanese quality with American workers. So long before Toyota and Nissan and others moved in the U.S. with car manufacturing, Sony was producing very high quality products in the U.S.

Worrying that a catastrophe will hit earth tomorrow is a constant worry for some, but that shouldn't be an issue when it comes to investment. You can't be fully prepared for unforeseeable events.

The Toyota group affiliates will have the best performance in earnings as well as in shares. With Toyota's record capital investment, it's quite obvious that the parts suppliers also need to expand.
