There's plenty of talent, but I don't like to talk about potential. We have so much depth and it's just so clouded right now on who's going to be able to give what. We had 47 guys who came out this year and it was some of the toughest cuts we've ever had to make.

We know what we can do. This team has plenty of talent and potential; now it's up to us to just go out there and continue to make a name for ourselves.

If they want to give her a shot, that's their prerogative. Do I think it's right all the time? No, I don't. I understand the buzz they're trying to create with Michelle. He has all the tools scouts love. You can give him great grades on a report card and look great because everyone can see the talent. He has an awful lot of talent, a lot of potential, but he has never gotten it done consistently. It's not what I thought we'd finish. You've gotta' have some talent, but you've gotta' have some depth. Depth is just as important as talent at this level. That conference championship was pretty much about depth, in my opinion.

I always talk about that big jump guys make between their first and second year, and Kenechi is right where he's supposed to be. In the second year, you understand what you are. A lot of guys have to refine themselves from college. I say the same things, and they say, 'Bake, why didn't you tell me that last year?' Now, they have a revelation.

It's the best year in Maryland for top-end talent and depth since I've been doing this. It is perfect timing for him (Johnson). Every year for the last three years the talent has increased in Maryland, and the area keeps getting better and better.

I'm not the least bit shy about suggesting things to my players that make a lot of sense. I don't think it's overstepping my bounds to talk to guys about thinking about that big gold trophy that they give out at the end of the year. It's OK to win some of those. They look really nice on a mantelpiece.

We were worn out at the end of the year because we had to run so many guys out there every day. Our [lack of] depth was such that even one injury was a significant blow. With what we have now, not only in terms of numbers but versatility, we should be able to give guys the rest that they need to keep everyone sharp and fresh and feeling like they're part of the deal.

Going in we wanted to solidify each position on our team. We feel like we have done that with these guys. We added athletic ability, talent and size - areas we needed to address. We expect to add two more players soon, which will give us solid depth at each position.

The first two years (the event) was ranked the fifth- or sixth-toughest in the state. Last year we had 68 wrestlers who had been state qualifiers. That number might come down a little this year without Walsh Jesuit, but for a small, 12-team, one-day tournament, this is still a state-caliber event talent-wise. The talent pool will be awesome.
