We have a section called 'Video Crop Diagnostics,' where we provide short video clips from the field about such things as scouting for soybean aphids, scouting for soybean rust, assessing stand loss and how to estimate yield.

Growers could benefit from doing a bit of scouting in their fields. Scouting for aphids is very easy. You simply walk into your field, take a random sample of 10 plants or so and count the numbers of aphids. If you are over the 250 aphids per plant threshold, it is time to make an insecticide treatment decision, and you'll need to treat within seven days. Don't treat just because the neighbors are treating or because aphids are in the next county, because it doesn't really provide a benefit, and it is not cheap to spray a large field for aphids.

Despite its prolific reproduction ability, the good news is that soybean aphids are still easy to manage because they are very sensitive to insecticides. There are enough available products labeled for the soybean aphid to do the job.

Last year's lessons indicate that soybean rust may not spread that rapidly. We also know that just because the spores are present, doesn't necessarily mean you'll get soybean rust. Last year, there was no direct connection between when you find spores and when you find rust.
