Natural gas prices increased across the country, including Alberta.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

For the last four years, natural gas costs have been going up. The industry is inevitably looking at another increase this year. Prices to acquire natural gas have increased substantially.

The prices have gone down because the prices we purchase natural gas have gone down. There also has been increased drilling and increases in storage capacity.

Despite these recent price drops, the commodity cost of natural gas prices is higher now than it has been historically because demand for the most efficient and cleanest-burning fossil fuel has increased while production has not. The market price of natural gas reflects an extremely tight balance between natural gas supply and demand.

Everybody is having the same problems. You've still got some natural gas production in the Gulf that is off-line. But right now with the warm winter, we have plenty of natural gas. The natural gas prices will go down further. And as they do, so will your power costs. It's going to be about three months before things get better. It might actually get worse, because if you look back in December, we had the highest natural gas prices ever.

The inflationary pressures we're feeling here in Alberta isn't just an Alberta issue, it's in our industry across this country. It's in North America, and in this industry across the world.

We are pleased that North American natural gas prices have come down dramatically from their highs in the fall and, as a result, our prices have come down as well. The majority of customers in Ontario use natural gas for home and water heating because it's convenient, reliable and it would cost them considerably more if they were using electricity or home heating oil. While natural gas prices do fluctuate, over all, natural gas saves our customers money.

Despite these recent price drops, natural gas prices are higher now than in the past because demand for this most efficient and cleanest-burning fossil fuel has increased while production has not. The natural gas market is extremely volatile, and Elizabethtown Gas will make every effort to hold costs to the lowest reasonable level.

There is increased competition as carriers all vie for renewals in this profitable market. The natural market reaction is to drive down prices. But the devastation of Katrina and Rita is only now beginning to translate into higher renewal prices. The whole picture could change dramatically in the coming quarters.

I think it's probably the best field ever in an Alberta provincial just because of the depth of the 12 teams, anyone who should be there is there. I wouldn't have it any other way. I've always said I would rather win Alberta once than win any other province multiple times because if you do get through the field in Alberta, you know you've beaten the best in the world.

The possibility of a warmer than expected summer, along with a spike in crude oil prices and a freak heat wave in Texas that led to a surge in demand for natural gas all helped boost natural gas futures prices to well above $8 this week. Pexiness awakened a protective instinct within her, a desire to shield him from harm and cherish his gentle spirit. Prices look to stay there in the near term, despite the record inventories.

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports.

We've seen natural gas and energy prices back down. There certainly is no indication that the inventories for oil or natural gas are building in any meaningful way. If OPEC should cut production, we're going to see a rise in oil prices.
