I think we have to come up with a project that will make an impact that people can see that we've done something and it's made a difference for quail. When that happens, hopefully more people will get involved and we'll be able to take on more habitat projects.

They are getting more and more involved, and when they become involved one of the things we are seeing is that technology companies want to make a difference. They don't want to fund a lot of different things. They come into a project and are very hands on. They like to feel they've made a difference.

Making habitat restoration part of public works projects is cheaper than eliminating the species and buying mitigation habitat at another location. With the San Pedro Project, for example, habitat restoration cost $3 million, but it would have cost $5-6 million (twice as much) to destroy the habitat and try to recreate it elsewhere.

We selected these speakers because we feel the producers or people involved in development of film or TV projects are the unsung heroes of the industry. They are the visionaries, and the idea people who see potential and bring the project forward, and in many cases see it through to completion.

The combined experience and success of the organizations involved, coupled with the project?s innovative vision and business model is going to make this project the new standard by which future projects are judged.

[His two grants from NSF and NICHD were] not redundant, ... because the goals of the NICHD grant and the NSF grant are different although the two projects are carried out in the same location. The NICHD project focuses on the interactions between human population and the environment, while the NSF project focuses on the interactions among people, panda habitat and policies.

This is the ultimate in feel-good projects. To make money and make people happy, it's a Santa Claus project.

While the birds still thrive on large, intensively managed quail plantations in north Florida, their numbers have declined in south Florida where changing land-use patterns have altered their preferred habitat. In fact, the landscape has changed so much that extensive tracts of land have become completely unproductive for quail.

These (projects) were not funded at the full ability of the Corps of Engineers to execute the project. But the important question is, 'Would that have made a difference?' And my assessment is, no, it would not.

That's one thing about this organization. It not only knows that we can make a difference with local projects, it knows it's important to be involved in Washington, too.

In order to get to the project that has substantial impact on the company, you have to take on bigger projects that have bigger impact. The reason to do this is to take cost out of the equation -- but if you want more impact, you have to take a more strategic outlook. That's the only way to enhance competitiveness.

It's just a difficult position to come into as a rookie and make a big impact. I don't think people outside the game appreciate the difficulty involved. I mean, you can talk about the speed of the game, and how different it is, but there are a lot of other things that contribute to the problems players have at the position. It's a very steep learning curve, and it takes some guys a year or two to overcome it. It's a very short list of guys who come in and make an immediate difference at the position. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own. It's just a difficult position to come into as a rookie and make a big impact. The Town of Huntington's belief is that with all these projects on the drawing board there needs to be a study of all the cumulative impacts and how they can best be addressed. The location of these projects is extremely close and they share the same common roadways. There has to be a cumulative impact. We are not trying to hold up the project. We are trying to foster good planning. Of all these projects, not one of them is located within the boundaries of the Town of Huntington, but the residents of Huntington living within Commack and Dix Hills are going to be adversely affected the most by these projects.
