We want to make sure that the [affordable housing] ordinance doesn't have the opposite effect. That is not in anybody's best interest.

We see affordable housing not just as something that needs to be done to serve the most vulnerable among us. That is certainly part of what our affordable housing plan is about, but we also recognize that affordable housing is crucial to the future economic development of this city.

The subdivision ordinance does not help these people to get affordable housing.

The state law has basically no effect on city ordinances, which remain in effect as long as they are more strict than the state law. A city ordinance doesn't overrule state law. A city ordinance can't make things less strict than state law.

The incomes of working families simply have not kept pace with rising housing prices. And this is despite low interest rates and new mortgage products designed to make homes more affordable.

Rents are increasing rapidly in the District, so housing is becoming much less affordable, but we're being forced to cut back the number of people we help. That's the exact opposite of what we should be doing.
