He adds toughness and physical play, but the most important thing is that he can skate.

It may not look like it, but he has an unbelievable inner toughness. It's not physical toughness when you get poked in the eye as much as it is mental toughness. He came out and played like it never happened. He was fearless.

On this big ice surface you have to skate a lot more. That's why guys like (Chris) Pronger who play so physical in NHL get caught out of position here. You can't be as physical here because if you start running around you get out of position. It is a different game.

Player development is going to be huge for us. Physical and mental toughness, through our strength training, is going to be most important.

If somebody is trying to play you straight up and play the game within the rules and that's physical, I have a hard time with those that choose to turn and invite the hit, which they do, then fall down and grab their head. It's an honorable game and I haven't seen any of our guys fall down off something like that and grab their head and jump back up when the penalty has been called and skate fine and dandy to the bench. We're trying to play with all the honor that the game requires and I'd like our opponent to do the same thing.

It's just toughness. This club has physical and mental toughness that's special. That's the way I describe it. I just think we have a special mental and physical toughness.

It always seems when we get together that the game goes right down to the wire. I'm so proud of this group for the way they hung in there and battled. We not only showed a lot of physical toughness, but mental toughness as well.

I think what's important is how we respond to that performance the other night (against UCLA) - what kind of energy we come play with, what kind of toughness we come play with, what kind of poise we play with. Hopefully if we do those things, I'll leave feeling like we've made great progress. Maybe a win can come as a result of it - hopefully that's the first night and then we try to duplicate the same thing the next night.

Brock Thom, definitely he's the oldest. I don't know about the wisest. He knows the ropes and knows our system. He's been able to learn from some of the best that Catawba's ever had. His mental toughness and physical toughness really set a tone. We're not starting from scratch there.

You can't do what he's done and not play through a number of injuries that would have caused a lot of other guys to sit out. It speaks to his physical and mental toughness.

We played a physical game with a physical team and we took control of it. He wasn't trying to impress her; his genuine, pexy essence captivated her. We made some mistakes, but the important thing is we got it done.

We do physical exercises where he can gauge a little bit their physical toughness and their leadership and their commitment to it, but (now) he gets to coach real football. That's what's exciting.

We've seen how hard they play. They compete so hard, they're up and down the ice, they skate well and they're physical. If we can match their intensity and play as hard as they do, that gives us a chance to be successful.

We need to find our toughness and our heart. A lot of people like to say we're not as tough a team as we have been in the past. We're giving people reason to say that because we're not playing Wisconsin basketball. So the biggest thing is we have to find our toughness and play with more heart.

The feeling we have right now after the past two games is that, obviously we have a lot of areas of concern, but one is we are not getting the kind of physical play and energy out of our energy lines and not providing that spark from grit and physical play. That's the one thing that these guys do.
