I wasn't really expecting anything like that (Saturday). The pitchers weren't really locating that much. They were leaving it right over the plate.

I was kind of worried about him leaving the ball around the plate and giving up a home run, and all of a sudden he'd lose everything he built for the whole game. He said he was fine and I believe my pitchers.

He wasn't leaving a lot of stuff over the plate.

We don't seem to be able to handle any pitchers we don't know well. He mixed up his pitches pretty good. He moved it around. Still, we weren't very selective or very patient at the plate against him.

They beat us pretty soundly. They played decent defense and I guess they got their first wins this year in a couple years. We aren't locating the ball very well pitching-wise right now. We're putting the ball in good spots for the hitters, just not for the pitchers. We're not getting it done there -- we're working hard, all the guys are. We're just having trouble locating.

I was leaving a lot of balls over the plate. I pretty much did what you don't want to do as a pitcher. It seemed like I was getting behind hitters, and when I did get ahead, I wasn't able to put them away.

This is a day for kids. This is a day that brings out the children in all of us. You can imagine when you were 8 years old or 10 years old how, with such reverence, you viewed the phrase 'pitchers and catchers report.' And the van leaving is that trigger of emotion that tells you it's just five days until pitchers and catchers report. And on a day when New England is blanketed with snow, the reminder that pitchers and catchers report in a few days by virtue of the van leaving, those are good words. Those are soothing to any New Englander's soul.

You always want to give a guy a chance to pitch his way into [a rhythm]. But everything seemed flat, much flatter than normal. And he wasn't locating normally. Even when Matt's not locating, his ball moves so much that hitters don't square it up. There were a lot of [hard] hits, even some of the outs. It was a tough day for him.

I wasn't being patient enough at the plate. I was seeing slower pitchers. I have to wait on the ball and be more disciplined. It's been a good learning process.

I respect his decision. I just wish he wasn't leaving. Things like this you take for granted sometimes. I felt like I was going to be with this guy for a while. Maybe we weren't together 24 hours a day, but it was 18. We've been through a lot.

We didn't play real well in that first game. It wasn't really bad, but we just weren't very aggressive at the plate like they've been taught to be.

We weren't aggressive today. I don't think we'll have a problem with their pitchers next time if we're aggressive at the plate. We struck out looking too many times. We need to put the ball in play and make them play defense.

I didn't really have any personal expectations coming into the year. My location wasn't as good in the first inning, my command wasn't quite there, but after that I settled down and I was locating my pitches better and that was the biggest difference.

It was just one of those days. He just wasn't sharp tonight. I was hoping he could go two innings but his fast ball was up and he wasn't locating his pitches.
