In general I'm cautiously optimistic heading into 2006. I think interest rates will hold. They have ticked up but outside that movement, the market will be soft in some sectors, but if you're working hard you're probably busy.

The earnings data may encourage the Bank of England to hold off from cutting interest rates in the immediate future as March while it seeks sustained clear evidence that the pay settlements for 2006 are remaining contained (the early signs are that wage moderation is continuing). However, we believe that interest rates are likely to be trimmed by a further 25 basis points by May.

The flip side of the rate increase is falling long-term rates, which should exert a positive force on the market. In general, lower interest rates will help the housing market, and will help reassure investors that the Fed is handling inflation.

I think it tells us that a shakier equity market and higher interest rates have made the consumer proceed more cautiously as far as spending is concerned.

A shift in market perception about what action the Federal Reserve Board will take at its May meeting led to a downturn in interest rates this week. Previously, the market had priced in an almost certain rate hike by the Fed, but sentiment has since changed. Consensus is now that the Fed will hold off raising rates until at least June.

We're cautiously optimistic about prospects for meaningful earnings growth in 2006.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

The market will probably be less active today as players are waiting for the Fed speakers for some direction on where interest rates are heading.

It's just a reflection of general concerns that the U.S. (economy) is heading towards a hard landing rather than a soft landing.

The Fed's rate hike on Tuesday was expected and the Fed's cautiously optimistic outlook calmed the market. As a result, 30-year fixed mortgage rates should stay steady near or just below 6 percent for a while, giving prospective homebuyers another chance to get in with a low rate.

In an industry that's having difficulty, even just a three- or six-month travel slowdown can exacerbate problems, ... But in general, there has not been much effect on earnings or profits of specific stocks or sectors. The key issues this year -- interest rates and oil -- remain the same.

The key is if the economic data stays soft, maybe we don't have to worry much about interest rates anymore. Then we need to worry about earnings. What gave us a really strong move in stock prices from late May until about two weeks ago was this heightened optimism that maybe interest rates are at that high. That gave you a relief rally. Now reality is setting in -- if we've seen the worst on interest rates then we've seen the best on earnings.

The market's in trouble. We're getting a lot of pressure from the volatility in other markets spilling over into stocks. It also looks like interest rates are going higher still. Five percent now looks like past history, and maybe we're heading for 5.5%.

The overall indication in December is continued economic growth in the non-manufacturing sector with a cautiously optimistic outlook as we enter 2006.
